Restore Affordable Birth Control

For years, federal law helped millions of college students and low-income women purchase prescription birth control at discount prices.

But legislation passed in 2005 removed this discount option, leading to a sharp increase in the cost of contraception for millions of women served by university health centers and some family planning clinics.

Please take a minute to tell Congress to make birth control accessible again for millions of women!

Talking Points

  • Congress must act now to help the millions of women who saw the cost of their prescription birth control skyrocket last year.
  • Contraception is basic healthcare, used by a majority of women in their childbearing years. 62% of women in their childbearing years currently use contraception; 95% of women will use contraception at some point in their lives.
  • This is a common-sense, bipartisan bill.
  • Cost often prevents women from obtaining prescription birth control, and restoring affordable birth control will not cost the government anything.

Dear [ Decision Maker ],

As a physician, I know that cost often prevents women from obtaining prescription birth control. Since more than half of U.S. pregnancies are unintended, we should all be working to make sure that women who want reliable contraception can access it.

Please close the loophole in the Deficit Reduction Act that caused contraception costs to skyrocket for more than three million college students and 800,000 low-income women. Support the Prevention Through Affordable Access Act (H.R.4054/S.2347) and encourage your colleagues to join you.
