Action Alert supporter,
Thank you! Your voice helped stem the exploitation of
car wash workers. Your actions stopped big health insurance
companies from routine, discriminatory policies that charged
women more than men solely based on their gender. And your
support ensured that California recognizes same-sex couples
married in other states.
With the work of dedicated ACLU/SC activists and supporters
like you, we helped push three important bills through the
California state legislature that are now law. But our work is
not over.
While this last legislative session saw many victories for
civil liberties, there were also some grave disappointments.
Just this weekend, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed three
important bills that ensure religious freedom, protect voting
rights for all and safeguard the rights of limited
English-speaking parents to access school meetings.
- The loyalty oath bill (SB 115) would have created a
religious exemption for those who refuse to take part in
McCarthy-era policies that require every California employee to
sign a “loyalty oath” stating they will defend the
country from "all enemies foreign and domestic" even if it
violates their religion or faith.
- The parental and guardian right to an interpreter bill (AB
1510) would have ensured parents can bring their own interpreter
to school meetings.
- The ensuring accuracy of voter rolls bill (AB 742) would
have fixed the voter rolls so that that they accurately
represent when a felon is eligible to vote.
Let’s continue to stand up for civil liberties,
religious freedom and the rights of voters and parents
everywhere. Join us in making our voices heard.
