Subject: Please Reject Governor Paterson's Proposed TAP Cuts

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I am deeply concerned about Governor Patterson's proposed cuts to the State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP).

As you know, the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) has afforded millions of students, with the opportunity to attend college who may not have had the opportunity otherwise. Cutting TAP is not a formula for jump-starting New York's economic engine, but rather a recipe for encouraging the cycle of poverty that has entwined our state for far too long.

Please help to protect the State Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) from mid-year Budget cuts proposed by Governor Paterson. The jobs of today and the jobs of tomorrow require more than a high school degree. Cuts to TAP will severely limit the ability of many students to access the funds that would make college affordable for them.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Background Information

The State's Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) offers critical financial assistance to thousands of college students across New York State. As a result of the legislative advocacy of APC and others, TAP has been expanded and strengthened over the past two decades. The maximum TAP award has grown from $2,200 to $5,000, the minimum TAP award has risen from $250 to $500, and the maximum TAP income eligibility has increased from $25,000 to $80,000. But over the past few years, little has been done to make college more affordable for thousands of students with limited incomes. For the past several years, APC students and graduates from across New York have successfully fought against TAP cuts.

While APC students and faculty asked the Legislature and the Governor to strengthen TAP earlier this year, Governor Paterson has proposed an almost $30 million cut to the program. This proposal, part of Governor Paterson's revised Budget plan, would slash vital funding to students that need it the most.

Whether you're a student, a parent, or a citizen interested in accessible, affordable higher education, it's time to speak out against Governor Paterson's proposed cuts to the TAP program. It's easy to get involved. Just follow the instructions, and send a TAP The Future! email to New York's elected leaders!
