The short explanation of this alert was:
When the new Congress was sworn in earlier this year, they vowed to renew efforts to fund the war on cancer. Unfortunately, they've gotten off on the wrong foot. While cancer advocates have united around requesting a 6.7% increase for the National Cancer Institute (NCI), House leaders have requested less than a third of that amount, or 1.5% -- less than the amount needed to maintain current services. The request for the National Institutes of Health, which includes NCI, was only 1.9% over last year.

The fight isn't over yet! As colorectal cancer advocates it is up to you to tell your Representative that we need to do better when it comes to cancer research. Contact your House member today and tell them to pass a bill that includes a 6.7% increase for NCI so we can continue moving forward in the fight against cancer.

  • 186 members of the House of Representatives signed a letter in support of a 6.7% increase for NIH.
  • Despite our progress, colorectal cancer will claim over 52,000 lives in 2007 alone and is currently the second leading cause of death by cancer.
  • Cancer cost the economy $206.3 billion in 2006 in direct medical costs and lost productivity.
  • Failure to provide adequate funding will stall the next generation of breakthroughs for colorectal cancer patients. The bill proposed in the House would do just that.
