The short explanation of this alert was:
Dear CFI Friends:
The 111th Congress is hitting the ground running! Even before the new members of Congress were sworn in, there was discussion of bills that may be voted on before the end of this week.
CFI has always opposed discrimination—support for human rights and the dignity of the individual are part of CFI's core mission—and we were especially vocal in support of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act last year, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that Ms. Ledbetter waited too long to file her wage discrimination complaint, and so could not be compensated for wages she lost. That Supreme Court decision affected all employees who are victims of pay discrimination —whether they are men or women, African American, Hispanic or white—and denied access to the courts to redress legitimate grievances—something CFI considers a fundamental right. The Ledbetter Act did not pass last year, but The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act (H.R. 11) was introduced into the House of Representatives on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2009 and is expected to be introduced into the Senate early next week.
Your voice urging the passage of this bill is vital to its success. The U.S. Capitol switchboard number is 202-224-3121. Please call your representative and senators today. Ask them to vote yes on this bill and to vote no to any amendments or substitutes.
To e-mail your representatives the following letter, simply click the button on the right. It is urgent! These bills could be history by next week.
