City Budget Alert: Support the Philadelphia Cultural Fund

In his first budget address, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter proposed a $2 million increase to the Philadelphia Cultural Fund, the nonprofit that provides general operating support to Philadelphia-based arts and cultural organizations through an annual appropriation in the City budget.

This increase may be threatened by a projected City revenue shortfall due to factors such as the downturn in the housing market. The Mayor has already met with City Council to discuss imminent adjustments to the budget.

City Council is expected to vote this Thursday, May 8, 2008, on the Operating Budget for fiscal year 2009. Contact your district Councilmember and those that are At-Large to urge them to keep the $2 million of additional funding proposed for the Philadelphia Cultural Fund.

As a constituent who is also a worker in the arts and culture sector, I urge you to support the Mayor's proposed $2 million increase to the Philadelphia Cultural Fund.  I understand the reality of economic fluctuations but a great city must continue to invest in the sectors that have proven themselves to be among its greatest strengths.

Philadelphia's arts and cultural sector offers almost 50,000 events annually to residents and tourists.  This level of availability makes our city more livable.  A city's livability attracts new residents and businesses and retains them once here.  A city's livability also contributes to its sense of place and community.

The annual investment in Cultural Fund grantees shows Council's understanding of the value of Philadelphia arts and culture.  Nevertheless, I'd like to point out a few more of the invaluable returns the city receives on such a small investment.  The arts and culture sector provides over 12,000 full and part-time jobs, it adds to the lifelong education of our residents, and adds to the diversity and cultural tolerance in our neighborhoods.

Thus, I urge you to increase your support by voting in favor of the Mayor's proposed $2 million increase in order to ensure that arts and cultural groups will continue to add to the strength of our city.
