The short explanation of this alert was:
Captina Creek in Belmont County is a refuge for nature-seeking families, fishermen, and the endangered eastern hellbender salamander. On a February night of this year, the clean and healthy waters of Captina Creek were engulfed by thousands of gallons of dirty coal waste, released from a massive storage lagoon at a nearby mine. This giant spill drifted down stream for 22 miles.
Take action now to protect Captina Creek.
Unfortunately, what happened this year is not an isolated occurrence. This pristine stream has taken abuse after abuse from seven separate coal slurry releases over the past eight years. Just prior to the release in February, Captina Creek appeared to be in recovery from an August 2005 spill that flooded a half-mile stretch of the stream with 30,000 gallons of the thick, black coal slurry.
As a result of yet another coal waste release, what will the responsible state agencies do differently to protect our precious resources? What will stop this same situation from unfolding yet again in another year or two?
