TAKE ACTION TO PROTECT CHACO TODAY!!

Chaco Culture National Historical Park is one of New Mexico’s greatest treasures.  The Park contains more than 20,000 acres of potential Wilderness and represents one of the greatest cultural sites in the world.

Recently many new threats to the ecological and archaeological resources of Chaco National Historical Park have surfaced.

  • Almost 20,000 acres of the Park have been identified as wilderness-quality lands by the National Park Service, yet they remain undesignated.
  • Energy development is encroaching upon the periphery of the Park. There are current oil and gas leases on state lands that are visible from the Park’s visitor center and seismic exploration in the vicinity are threatening the cultural resources of the Park.
  • The proposed paving of the main road into the Park could open these fragile landscapes and artifacts to tour buses and more visitors than the Park can support.
  • Significant archaeological sites have been identified outside of the current Park boundary.

New Mexico Wilderness Alliance is negotiating to remove the current threats to Chaco. We are making progress!  The State Land Office and the Cimarex Oil Company have delayed any immediate plans for developing the leases visible from the Park’s Visitor Center. We must not let up.  Please help us protect Chaco today.
