Campaign Unavailable We're sorry, this alert is no longer available. If you would like to learn more about ways you can take action, please visit NYCLU E-Activism.The short explanation of this alert was: Last month, Governor Spitzer announced a reversal of the Pataki-era policy that prevented undocumented New Yorkers from obtaining a state driver's license. Under the new policy, New Yorkers will no longer have to prove their immigration status when applying for a driver’s license. The new policy will allow hundreds of thousands of motorists to obtain a driver’s license and automobile insurance, ensuring safer roads for millions of New Yorkers. It also includes enhanced safeguards against fraud and requires immigrants to produce secure and verifiable identity documents, such as foreign passports, to become licensed drivers. The policy will enable some 500,000 New Yorkers to emerge from the shadows and become full contributing members of society and the economy, building trust between undocumented communities and law enforcement. In recent weeks, some lawmakers have used Governor Sptizer's announcement of the policy to disparage the immigrant community and play on the public’s fears of a terrorist attack. But New Yorkers are too smart to fall for this blatant fear-mongering. Take a moment to send a free fax to Governor Spitzer below, thanking him for taking a courageous step for public safety, immigrants' rights and the civil liberties of all New Yorkers.
