The short explanation of this alert was:
Take Action: tell the Bush administration to protect mountains and streams from mountaintop removal coal mining
The Bush administration recently released a draft Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) of mountaintop removal coal mining. While the studies accompanying the EIS concluded that the effects of mountaintop removal are severe and irreversible, the administration actually recommends allowing the practice to continue without limits. Worse, it even suggests weakening important environmental protections to accelerate the destruction.
More than 1200 miles of streams have been buried or degraded by mountaintop removal, where coal companies literally blow the tops off mountains and dump the resulting waste into nearby valleys and streams. The practice has also flattened hundreds of square miles of forested mountains and destroyed one hundred thousand acres of wildlife habitat. Even worse, mountaintop removal has forced communities to leave their generations-old homes.
Take action! The Bush administration is currently seeking public comments on the draft EIS, and the deadline is January 21, 2004. Send a letter telling the administration to support alternatives that would limit the harmful effects of mountaintop removal coal mining, not weaken existing environmental protections.
