The short explanation of this alert was:
Accurate labeling of food enables us all to make informed choices about what we buy and what we eat. With growing concerns about food safety, this is becoming more important to consumers.
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is preparing to add a "Naturally Raised" label to meat products. This is a good idea. However, USDA's definition of "naturally raised" only takes into account what the animals are fed. The proposed label standard fails to recognize many sustainable and humane production practices normally associated with the term "naturally raised."
For example, livestock that spend their entire lives in giant feedlots, with no access to pasture, would be permitted to be labeled "naturally raised."
The USDA is accepting comments until March 8th, so please take action today!
Tell USDA to improve the "naturally raised" label to provide accurate labeling for consumers.
