The short explanation of this alert was:
National & Global Youth Service Day (April 20-22) is just around the corner, and it's a perfect occasion to engage government officials in your service and volunteer work. You might consider asking them to do one or more of the following:
-
attend your events and deliver remarks,
-
be an honorary chair or host of your event(s),
-
make public resources or venues available to support your service work,
-
make a proclamation about National & Global Youth Service Day,
-
Write an op-ed or letter to the editor in the local paper, or
-
Make a public service announcement encouraging participation in N&GYSD
For more suggestions, please refer to our tipsheets on inviting elected officials and effective practices for engaging them in your projects.
As a first step, you can use our online advocacy tool to edit a sample message to your governor, U.S. Senators, and U.S. Representative. (You can also find contact information for your state legislators here.) Please remember that you must follow up with phone calls to ensure that they have received your message and to confirm their participation.
Also, remember to request proclamations and resolutions from governors, mayors, and state legislatures as soon as possible in order to allow time for drafting and approval. (See a sample proclamation here.) If you need assistance or advice on how to engage government officials in your work, please contact Ross Wilson at rwilson@ysa.org.
Under "Talking Points" below is a sample message with some suggestions on what kind of information to include in your letter. Feel free to copy and paste some or all of this text into the message field below it.
