The short explanation of this alert was:

Chances are you have not had to pay any state or municipal taxes on the service you use to connect to the Internet. That's not because governments don't want to levy these taxes -- they do. Just think of the fees and taxes on your cell phone bill. But thanks to a federal law passed in 1998, and renewed in 2001 and 2004, a moratorium has stopped new taxes from targeting Internet access services. DSL, cable modem, and wireless Internet services are safe from new taxes -- although for how much longer remains in question.

The current moratorium on Internet access taxes is scheduled to expire on November 1, 2007, and many state and local government officials are already planning on methods for imposing new taxes and fees. Congress needs to act quickly and make the ban permanent. Why such a hurry? If we get the House and Senate moving now, the high-taxers won't be able to crank up their propaganda machine to full speed. Remember too that Congress will be taking several recesses between now and November, including the whole month of August. With such a crowded legislative agenda, we must build momentum right now for the Permanent Internet Tax Freedom Act.

We've also produced a short, easy-to-understand online video on the importance of banning Internet access taxes. You can view the video by clicking here.
