The short explanation of this alert was:
Older Americans deserve a Medicare system where improving their access to quality healthcare is the number one priority. That’s why the American Geriatrics Society needs your help in urging Congress to take immediate steps this year to prevent cuts in Medicare physician payments as well as thoughtful action aimed at reforming the physician fee schedule system.

Currently, the formula that determines how much the Federal government pays doctors who serve Medicare patients will result in drastic cuts totaling 34% over the next nine years. Meanwhile, the cost of treating Medicare patients, who are often chronically ill, will increase by 22% over the same period. This huge financial gap will force more and more physicians to either limit the number of Medicare patients they serve or reduce the quality and intensity of the care they provide. The ultimate result is that older Americans will have fewer options for quality care, and that is just not fair.

What can you do to make sure that older Americans can continue to have access to high quality care through Medicare? Simply read the letter below, fill in the information to the right, and click on the “Send this Message” button to e-mail this letter to your Members of Congress. Please note that you can edit the second half of the letter by adding any firsthand challenges you have faced that were created by the Medicare physician payment system.
