The short explanation of this alert was:

The position of attorney general of the United States is the most important law enforcement job in the country and has stood, until recently, as a symbol to the world of respect for the rule of law.  The American people expect the attorney general, regardless of which party controls the White House, to embody the highest standards of character, honesty, and ethics. 

Just as we warned when we opposed his nomination, Alberto Gonzales has betrayed that trust and the compact with the American people.

First as White House counsel in President Bush’s first term and now as attorney general, Mr. Gonzales has displayed flagrant disrespect for our system of laws and the principles of check and balances on which our government is founded.

The time is long overdue for Attorney General Gonzales to be removed from office.  We urge you to sign our petition telling President Bush that the American people deserve a new attorney general who will restore respect for the Constitution.
