The short explanation of this alert was:

On Friday, February 2nd, 2007 the Michigan Court of Appeals released the most anti-GLBT ruling in Michigan's history.  The Court held that the 2004 Michigan Constitutional amendment banning marriage equality also prohibits public employers in Michigan (such as cities, school districts, community college and universities) from being able to offer domestic partnership benefits.  These benefits are often used to provide important resources such as health care to public employee's partners and their partner's children.

Suggested Text:

I am deeply concerned by the decision of the Michigan Court of Appeals prohibiting public employers from offering domestic-partnership benefits to the partners and children of public employees.

The decision economically and psychologically attacks vulnerable families in Michigan, especially in a time when Michigan’s economy is on the downturn.

The Court has put the safety, well-being, and primary human needs of these families at needless risk.

The State of Michigan must strive to meet the basic human needs of Michigan families, with particular attention to the relief and empowerment of the vulnerable, the poor, and the oppressed.

I intend to work for a reversal of the decision by the Michigan Supreme Court, and by Federal courts if need be.

I invite other members of the Michigan community to join with me in supporting and advocating for the human and civil rights of all.
