Across the country, lawmakers, civil libertarians and concerned Americans of all backgrounds are uniting to oppose the Real ID Act.
This controversial legislation attempts to federalize state driver's licenses by imposing regulations on their issuance and appearance. It establishes a system of government databases and electronic checkpoints that will, in effect, create America’s first-ever national ID card system.
The law will cost billions to implement, trigger bureaucratic nightmares, aid identity thieves, threaten privacy and stifle liberty. Coming from an administration with a long track record of civil liberties violations, the potential for abuse under Real ID is tremendous.
Since Congress passed it in 2005, the Real ID Act has sparked intense, bipartisan opposition throughout the country. Eleven states have passed statutes prohibiting implementation of the Real ID Act, and 10 others have passed non-binding resolutions expressing opposition to it.
In New York, a coalition of groups and organizations from across the political spectrum, the New York Alliance Against the Real ID Act, has formed to oppose to the Real ID Act.
Congress must take action to repeal the Real ID Act.
