I am writing to urge you to reject the nomination of Richard Honaker to the federal district court in Wyoming.  Throughout his career, Mr. Honaker has actively worked to undermine a woman's right to reproductive freedom.  Mr. Honaker's extreme views call into question his willingness to uphold Supreme and Circuit court precedent and enforce federal statutory law.  His failure to protect our fundamental rights, along with extreme statements he has made about the place of religion in American life, makes him the wrong choice for a lifetime appointment to the federal bench.

As a representative in the Wyoming State Legislature, Honaker introduced the "Human Life Protection Act," which would have criminalized abortion from the moment of conception, even for women who were the victims of rape or incest, unless they had reported those crimes to the authorities within five days. After the bill was twice defeated in the legislature, Mr. Honaker worked with the "Unseen Hands Prayer Circle" to place it on the statewide ballot.  Again, the people of Wyoming soundly rejected Mr. Honaker's extreme legislation.

In public statements, Mr. Honaker has made it clear that his views are not merely his personal opinion but also his legal philosophy.  In defense of his "Human Life Protection Act," Mr. Honaker emphasized his role as an attorney, saying, "I know the law and I know how to write it so it means what it's supposed to mean."  His flawed legal interpretations, in conjunction with his dismissive statements about the Supreme Court and its precedents, cast doubt upon his ability to fairly enforce the law, particularly laws he openly despises, from the federal bench.

I urge you to reject this nomination and insist that lifetime appointments to the federal bench be filled only by those with a demonstrated commitment to equal justice under law.
