CAMP INQUIRY 2009
The Wonders of Science
July 6–12

The Center for Inquiry is pleased to announce its 2009 summer program for children ages seven to sixteen.  In its fourth year, Camp Inquiry will take place from July 6 through the 12 at Camp Seven Hills in Holland, New York.  The site boasts 620 acres of woodland paths, meadows, streams, and hills perfect for outdoor exploration.  Camp Seven Hills is fully insured and accredited with the American Camp Association.  With its impressive 5 to 1 camper to counselor ratio, Camp Inquiry will be run by a staff of fully screened and trained teacher-counselors, including a trained medical professional.

This year's theme is “The Wonders of Science.”  As science increases our knowledge of the natural world, mankind transforms belief in magic into understanding of reality.  As skeptical reasoners, it is important that we understand the truth behind tricks and illusions.  Through hands-on workshops and guest presenters, campers will explore scientific inquiry, the elements of observation, the diversity of individual perspectives, collaborative relationships, the use of imagination, and the narratives passed down by our ancestors that chronicle our perceptions of the world.

Through a combination of scientific team-building projects, expressive art projects and self-analysis, creatively structured camp games, traditional campfires, and guided nature walks, Camp Inquiry creates a well-rounded environment for children to think, question, and grow.  Most important, this is a place for kids to be themselves and to meet other children who share common interests.

Camp Inquiry helps youth confront the challenges of living a nontheistic/secular lifestyle in a world dominated by religious belief and pseudoscience.  Grounded on the conviction that kids can begin establishing habits of the good and ethical life early on, Camp Inquiry has a three-part focus: the arts and sciences, the skeptical perspective, and ethical character development.  Campers and teacher-counselors will address key issues of individual identity, forging trusting relationships, establishing a sense of local and global community, and living with respect for the natural world.
