Greetings,
Three years ago, the Center for Inquiry's Office of Public
Policy opened in the Capitol Hill neighborhood in Washington,
DC. Since then we have defended science, reason, and
secularism at the heart of our nation's political sphere.
We have been successful in forging relationships with
sympathetic legislators, developing language used in bills
relevant to our causes, and holding national press conferences
to raise awareness about breaking issues.
To cite one example, the OPP dealt a body blow to global
warming deniers by exposing the lack of credibility of purported
climate experts who deny human-caused global warming. In
Senator Inhofe's Senate Minority Report, almost 700 individuals
with implied scientific credentials were offered as evidence
that measures to address climate change are premature and that
further research is needed. The Center for Inquiry
demonstrated that the Senate Minority Report fails to make a
credible case that a large number of actual climate scientists
take exception to the near-universal consensus of the research
community. Actions taken by the OPP included vetting the
report, distributing the results to key legislators, and hosting
a national press conference to share the findings.
As you can see, this is very important work. We could
not have done this without you. Now more than ever, we
appreciate your past support. There are many other
successes that we could cite and many other issues we need to
work on. But the most critical issue today is our need for
financial support. We are certain that you understand the
impact that the economic downturn has had on nonprofit
organizations. We have been able to cut some expenses, but
we do not want to curtail the work of the OPP. If we have
to do that, we are likely to lose the hard-won gains that we
have made with the legislators. If we lose the voice that
the OPP provides, who will fill that void?
So on the eve of the third anniversary of the OPP, we hope
you will consider a special gift to help continue our
work. This gift can be made by clicking the donate button,
by mailing in a check, or by calling 1-800-818-7071 and letting
us know that you would like to support the OPP's anniversary
celebration. Please do not put this off for another
minute. The OPP has been here for you in DC promoting and
defending science, reason, and secular values. Now, we
hope that you will be here for us.

Thank you.
Sincerely,
Toni Van Pelt Vice President and Policy
Director
