Let Dr. Ackerman know that arts education matters!

On June 1, Dr. Arlene Ackerman began as the new CEO of the School District of Philadelphia.  As the CEO, Dr. Ackerman will be instrumental in getting the arts back into Philadelphia public schools. Please email her and urge her to support the district Arts Policy that will go before the School Reform Comission later this month. The policy mandates that the arts are acknowledged as a core subject area, and that a sequential and standards-based arts curriculum is implemented at all levels for music, art, theater, and dance by highly qualified teachers and administrators.  Furthermore, the policy states that ongoing measurement of student learning in the arts will ensure compliance with state mandates.

I write to you in the hopes that you will help lead the city in returning the arts to schools through policy change at the district level. I ask you to support the Arts Policy that is currently before the School Reform Commission. The policy mandates that the arts are acknowledged as a core subject area, and that a sequential and standards-based arts curriculum is implemented at all levels for music, art, theater, and dance by highly qualified teachers and administrators. Furthermore, the policy states that ongoing measurement of student learning in the arts will ensure compliance with state mandates. The arts education policy is an essential component of the fight to return arts to Philadelphia public schools, and will further the groundswell of family and community support for this effort.
