From the Director
The 2009 legislative session has ended, but uncertainty persists over funding for homeless programs. Because the legislature and the Governor were unable to reach a budget agreement, the Governor plans to unallot funding after July 1st, the start of the next fiscal year. Here’s the status of Heading Home Minnesota’s legislative agenda at the end of session. The next question is whether funds for these programs will be unalloted next month? Read more...

Philip Mangano Steps Down from USICH
After seven years as Executive Director for the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH), Philip Mangano has stepped down. Referred to by many as ‘the homelessness czar’, Mangano was a tireless advocate for reforming the approach to homelessness, engaging new leadership, and providing evidence-based practices that work. Minnesota Housing Honors Jim Frey
On Monday, May 18, Minnesota Housing honored Jim Frey, co-chair of Heading Home Minnesota and President and CEO of the Frey Foundation, with its Leadership Award. The award was made at the agency’s Partners in Affordable Housing event at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul. This annual event honors and celebrates the work of the many people and organizations who work to create and maintain affordable housing. Read more...

Introducing Heading Home West Central, the Newest Plan to Join Minnesota's Statewide Coordinated Campaign to End Homelessness
Heading Home Minnesota welcomes the twelfth plan to join the campaign to end homelessness, Heading Home West Central. Building on more than 20 years of activism and community organizing around homelessness, the Heading Home West Central Plan brings together businesses, faith communities, advocates, and civic associations to create a solid foundation to end homelessness, not just manage it. Fargo Moorhead Chamber of Commerce Sponsors Homelessness Simulation for Youth Leadership Program
It isn’t easy trying to describe to someone what homelessness is – what it looks like, feels like, and why it exists. When the Fargo Moorhead Chamber of Commerce decided to try and help members of their Youth Leadership Program better understand the complexity of homelessness, they did so in the most obvious manner they could envision. Homeless Veterans Photography Exhibit Kicks Off Two-Year Statewide Tour at Minnesota History Center
On Monday, May 11, more than 75 people gathered inside the Minnesota History Center Capitol Concourse for the launch of a two-year statewide tour of ‘Portraits of Home II: Homeless Veterans in Search of Stable Housing in Greater Minnesota,’ a photography exhibit documenting the housing challenges facing Minnesota’s veterans. Heading Home Minnesota is launching a new volunteer opportunities page on our website. This page is intended to provide information to individuals, groups, and businesses interested in serving people experiencing homelessness, and in ending homelessness throughout Minnesota. The Heading Home Minnesota Steering Committee, co-chaired by Jim Frey of the Frey Foundation and by Carleen Rhodes of the Minnesota and Saint Paul Community Foundations, consists of community leaders from the public, business, nonprofit, faith, and philanthropic sectors. The work is led by Executive Director Kit Hadley.
