Greetings,

Update

The 123rd Legislative Session that began last month is already both promising and challenging. With a record number of bills submitted and many priority issues on our agenda, our team at Maine Audubon looks forward to working with activists, legislators, coalition members, and YOU to successfully advance our agenda, highlighted in our annual Legislative Preview available at http://www.maineaudubon.org/conserve/legis/preview_2007.shtml

Priority Issues Highlights

Expanding Maine's Endangered Species List
The Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Committee of the Maine Legislature is considering a bill to add 14 animals to the state’s list of endangered and threatened species, but in response to concerns raised by hunters, legislators may not include the Barrow's goldeneye.  Lawmakers on the IFW Committee must hear from you before their work session on the bill Tuesday, February 27.  Please urge lawmakers to maintain the integrity of the list and base decisions not on politics but on science, which clearly indicates that Barrow's goldeneye should be listed.  http://www.maineaudubon.org/act/070207_esa.shtml

Bipartisan Support Builds to Renew Land for Maine’s Future Funding

Democratic and Republican leaders in the Maine Legislature recently announced their support for a new bond measure to fund the state’s popular Land for Maine’s Future Program.  http://www.maineaudubon.org/conserve/legis/lmf_facts.shtml

Legislators Seek to Boost Riverfront Community Development

Words of bipartisanship indicate strong chances for success for one of Maine Audubon’s top legislative priorities: a $25 million bond for riverfront community revitalization. http://www.maineaudubon.org/conserve/legis/river_bond_facts.shtml

Significant Wildlife Habitat – Protecting Shorebird Habitat

Despite the near unanimous support last session for rules to protect significant wildlife habitat for migratory shorebirds, multiple bills have been submitted this session to repeal parts or all of the rules. http://www.maineaudubon.org/act/070223_swh.shtml
