Sample Letter for Campaign

Subject: Please oppose amendments that weaken local wetlands protections

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

One Senate and two House amendments have been filed to require local communities to consider wetlands mitigation proposed by developers. While mitigation may work for some communities, it does not for all. Some counties have few natural wetlands remaining and should not be forced to accept bad mitigation plans in exchange for the destruction of natural wetlands.

Many of these counties have taken additional steps to safeguard their imperiled wetlands, and should continue to have the freedom to base their decisions about local resources on local circumstances.

Please oppose the following amendments that would mandate mitigation be considered by ALL Florida counties: SB 1112, Amendment #137801 by Rep. Needleman HB 1447, Amendment #896019 by Rep. Reagan HB 7133, Amendment #080263 by Rep. Needleman

Thank you for your perseverance in representing my interests in these last days of session!

Sincerely,

Background Information

So far, language has been attached to three bills which would require local communities to consider wetlands mitigation proposed by developers. "Mitigation" means the preservation or creation of wetlands elsewhere to offset the loss of wetlands on a development site. While this may work for some communities, it does not for all. It can be difficult to locate existing or create new wetlands that perform the same function and connectivity of the original system. Communities should not be forced to accept bad mitigation plans in exchange for the destruction of natural wetlands.

The amendments are:

SB 1112: Development Permits
by Sen. Mike Bennett, R-Bradenton
Amendment #137801
by Rep. Mitch Needleman, R-Melbourne

HB 1447: Development Permits
by Rep. Ron Reagan, R-Sarasota
Amendment #896019
by Rep. Ron Reagan, R-Sarasota

HB 7133: Environmental Protection
by the Environmental Regulation Committee
Amendment # 080263
by Rep. Mitch Needleman, R-Melbourne
