Greetings,
Time
is running out to save the funding for the new Off-Highway
Vehicle Board. The recent special session of the New Mexico
State Legislature has put at risk the $800,000 funding for the
new Off-Highway Vehicles Board to accomplish its mission. Goal
number one is to reduce the amount of damage to public and
private lands caused by OHV riders. The Board will launch a
campaign to educate riders about where they can and cannot
go.
Without the funds
necessary to accomplish their work, the Board will have only a
name and no funds to operate. The New Mexico Wilderness Alliance
and its partners, including many concerned citizens have worked
on this issue for over three years. In the last session of the
legislature we were successful in moving the Board out of the
Tourism Department to the Department of Game and Fish, which has
enforcement experience.
Let’s not let
the ATV industry and those who damage our lands win a back door
victory. Call Governor Richardson now at (505) 476-2200.
Tell the Governor that people are frustrated with the damage and
that an effective Board is needed to help slow it
down.
