The coup in Albany: What you can do.

A docket of bold social justice legislation that was ready for action in Albany is in limbo – at least for now.

The coup in the New York State Senate this week sidetracked legislation that would provide:

  • recognition of marriage rights for lesbians and gays;
  • clear, affirmative recognition of the right to reproductive choice;
  • protections against bias-based bullying in schools;
  • comprehensive sex education in schools;
  • paid family leave benefits;
  • transparency and accountability in the mayor’s operation of the NYC school system;
  • and more...

For more than a generation, the old-line majority in the Senate killed almost every major piece of progressive legislation. Assuming the current deal holds, this agenda is once again at risk – potentially for years.

We cannot afford to wait another generation for real change in New York.

Subject: Protect the Social Justice Agenda

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

The upheavals this week in the New York State Senate threaten to kill the social justice legislative agenda that was practically guaranteed to pass.

And it puts this agenda at risk potentially for years.

Don't betray the principles of fairness and justice.

I call on you to ensure that the Senate passes the full docket of social justice legislation:

- Marriage Fariness - The Reproductive Health Act - The Family Medical Leave Act - The Family Health Care Decisions Act - Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) - Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) - Transparency and oversight in mayoral control - Healthy Teens Act

Sincerely,
