Support Marriage Fairness!

In 2007, the NYS Assembly passed the marriage fairness bill in a bipartisan vote of 85-61, with an impassioned floor debate lasting more than three hours. Now we need the Senate to act.

Just today, Governor Paterson introduced a bill giving lesbian and gay couples the right to marry. Now it is time for the NYS Senate and Assembly to step up and make New York the next champion in the fight for fairness. The fight is close, and our elected officials need to hear from us!

Currently, many same-sex couples can’t make medical decisions for one another or visit a sick partner in the hospital, get employer healthcare coverage for their family or provide a security net for their children because their relationship is not recognized

Governor Paterson’s civil marriage bill would right those wrongs.

Subject: Protect our Families - Support Marriage Fairness!

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

One of the most important things that you can do as an elected official is to help protect and support all of New York's families. I am writing today to ask you to support Marriage Fairness legislation

Extending marriage rights to all New Yorkers, including lesbian and gay couples, will protect families by granting them the 1,324 state rights, benefits, and protections that they are currently denied. On a more fundamental level, marriage rights will give same-sex couples and their families the security and comfort of knowing that the government does not consider them second-class citizens. It affords them the knowledge that they can visit a sick partner in the hospital, make medical decisions and ensure their children are safe and cared for.

All families deserve the same protections, and the New York State Legislature has a responsibility to ensure fairness and justice for all of its citizens.

I hope you give priority to marriage fairness, and I look forward to following your efforts to ensure its passage.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,
