Stop the Shackling of Pregnant Women
New York has allowed the shackling of incarcerated women during pregnancy and labor for far too long. This unnecessary and barbaric treatment subjects women to increased pain and can be dangerous to both the woman and her baby.
Thankfully, the New York State Legislature has passed a bill that would prohibit this cruel and unusual punishment. It just needs Governor Paterson’s signature.
Join us in urging the governor to end the shackling of pregnant women!

Subject: Sign the Anti-Shackling Bill (S.1290-A/A.3372-A)
Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
I join the New York Civil Liberties Union in urging you to sign the Anti-Shackling Bill (S.1290-A/A.3373-A) into law. The practice of shackling women during labor and after delivery is unnecessary, dangerous, and cruel and unusual punishment. This law will protect the health and safety of pregnant women incarcerated in New York State without compromising the safety of medical or correctional staff.
I strongly urge you to sign this legislation and end the practice of shackling pregnant women in our prisons and jails.
Sincerely,
|
