Make Health Care Reform = Health Care for All

The clock is ticking on health care reform, and now is the time for action.

Some elected officials are trying to derail health care reform by adding exclusions and restrictions based on ideology.  Rather than focusing on helping everyone in America access the health care they need, conservative lawmakers are trying to exclude coverage of abortion, exclude documented immigrants from coverage, and undo state laws that extend affordable coverage to low income people and protect our rights to health care.

Designing a health care system that denies basic health care to those in need and limits coverage of basic health care services is not real reform!

Access to health care benefits should be based on medical need, not politics or ideology.

Let your representative know that we need real health care reform and health care for all by sending a free fax below.

Subject: Protect health care in New York and expand coverage for all

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

As your constituent and a supporter of the New York Civil Liberties Union, I want health care reform that provides comprehensive health care on an equal basis for all New Yorkers.

I hope that you will fight for health care reform that:

- Includes the full range of reproductive health services, including abortion care.

- Covers children and pregnant women regardless of immigration status.

- Allows everyone who pays their taxes, including documented immigrants, to access insurance coverage.

- Makes federal reform the "floor," not the "ceiling," allowing states to maintain laws and policies that go above federal minimum standards.

I urge you to oppose any reform plans that would limit coverage of reproductive health care or deny care based on immigration status. Access to health care should be based on medical need, not politics or ideology.

Sincerely,

Background Information

If conservatives in Congress get their way, health care "reform" could cause roll back of hard-won benefits and protections for women and families in New York:

- Women covered through private insurers for contraception, abortion, and other primary reproductive health care could lose that coverage.

- Documented immigrants who pay taxes could be excluded from eligibility.

- Children and pregnant women could lose their coverage in New York because of their immigration status or level of income.
