Ask Congress to Honor Dr. Tiller

When doctors are murdered for practicing medicine, something has to change.

Each Member of Congress must honor Dr. Tiller by co-sponsoring a resolution from Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-NY) that offers condolences to his family and decries the use of violence.

Just as we must never forget Dr. Tiller, Congress must never forget the importance of reproductive health care. Women’s health must be central to the debate over health care reform.

As a tribute to Dr. Tiller, help stop the marginalization of reproductive health care and its providers. Help give women the medical attention they need to stay healthy and alive.

Tell your Member of Congress to honor Dr. Tiller with a health care plan that serves women.

Subject: Honoring Dr. Tiller

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

As a physician, I am saddened and outraged by Dr. Tiller's murder.

I call on Congress to support House Resolution 505 expressing condolences to Dr. Tiller's family and decrying the use of violence to silence political opponents.

But this resolution is not enough. To keep our country's reproductive health care providers safe, the marginalization of their services must stop.

As you work to reform the health care system, remember that reproductive health care is basic health care for women. Any reform must guarantee access to comprehensive reproductive health care to keep women and families well.

Sincerely,

Background Information

We are heartbroken and outraged by the murder of our colleague, friend, and mentor. * Dr. George Tiller was a family practitioner who was not afraid to say publicly that he provided abortions, and was honored by his colleagues for his courage and skills. He was an unsung hero to the women whose lives he saved every day. * Our thoughts and condolences are with his family, and with the staff who worked beside Dr. Tiller at Women’s Health Care Services in Wichita, Kansas. * Despite persistent harassment, Dr. Tiller could not be deterred from providing safe, legal abortions to women who needed them. * Violence and murder will not end the need for abortion. * Dr. Tiller provided an essential service to thousands of women who needed abortions after their first trimester of pregnancy. * While abortion providers are understandably frightened by Dr. Tiller’s murder, we are also determined to continue providing this essential service.
