The Shawnee Institute, Ltd.  is a 501(c)(3) public charity established by the Kirkwood family to provide humanitarian assistance to people in crisis. The family has a particular connection to Thailand and its people: parents Charlie and Ginny lived in Thailand from 1965 through 1972, and had three of their five children there. Ginny was director of Peace Corps Thailand during the 1990s.

People all over the world are desperate to do what they can to help victims of the recent tsunami. Pete Kirkwood, who (with his wife Liz) lives in Phuket and speaks fluent Thai, is ideally suited to represent the Shawnee Institute on the ground there and to channel this impulse into effective action.
