Tell The Governor Not To Shortchange The Coastal Commission
Established in 1972 by a vote of the people, the California Coastal Commission has the responsibility to protect California's treasured coast. However, the Commission has been drastically underfunded since the 1980’s when for political reasons their budget was repeatedly cut. Because of low funding, the Commission is not able to carry out the functions prescribed by the Coastal Act of 1976, including planning and enforcement.
The Legislature has augmented the Governor’s proposed budget for 2007-08 to add three new positions for enforcement of the Coastal Act. While they could clearly use more staff than that, this will be helpful in getting permit conditions enforced and in stopping illegal development. In addition, the Legislature added funding to continue the broadcasting of the monthly Commission meetings via internet webcast. This newer practice allows citizens unable to attend in person to see the action as it unfolds; it helps to hold commissioners accountable for their actions. Send the Governor a message. Please use the talking points below.

Subject: Please Support the Coastal Commission's Funding
Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,
Dear Governor Schwarzenegger: I write to strongly urge you to support the Legislature's augmentation in the 2007-08 Budget to give the California Coastal Commission an additional three positions and the continued ability to webcast its monthly meetings. This most critical of state bodies protects public access to out great coast and ensures it's stewardship for future generations. Current levels of staff cause unnecessary delays in processing permits and local government plans. Public opinion polls consistently show strong support among Californians for stronger coastal protection, yet for many years it's budget has been at ridiculously low levels. That is why I am asking you to support the budget augmentation for the Commission and in doing so to live up to your campaign promises to support a strong Commission.
Sincerely,

The spectacular California coast is a great place to play, exercise, spend time with family or seek solace from our urban lives. It's also a vital, yet fragile, habitat that supports endangered species. Unfortunately, our coast is threatened by a constant barrage of proposals to build mansions, subdivisions, golf courses, seawalls and giant commercial venues. From the smallest wetland to the most popular swimming beach, with so much of California's coastline developed we need to do our part to save what's left. The California Coastal Commission's job is to protect the California coastline and to review about 1,000 development proposals each year, under-funding of this independent commission weakens the Coastal Act and jeopardizes the future of our wonderful coast.
