Dear Friend of the Coast,

Help stop the Schwarzenegger offshore oil drilling power grab

First I want to thank all of you who wrote letters and attended the crucial State Lands Commission hearing on the PXP offshore oil development hearing on April 16 in Santa Monica.  As a result of your efforts, the Commission voted 2-1 to pass a resolution opposing Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's 'Naked Power Grab' to facilitate the first new offshore oil drilling in California in over 30 years off Santa Barbara.  See a story of the hearing here.

Sadly, and despite near universal condemnation of the plan, the Governor continues to push the sinister offshore drilling scheme as part of the budget, which would strip State Lands of its legal jurisdiction and allow a precedent for the Governor to cut back room deals.

The matter has become even more confused since some in Santa Barbara continue to support the drilling and are helping Schwarzenegger by describing the deal in the press as "a dream come true." http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2009/06/07/MN251808DH.DTL

The State Legislature, meanwhile, is likely to vote on the PXP offshore drilling ploy THIS WEEK as part of the Governor's proposed budget.

IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU CONTACT YOUR STATE SENATE AND ASSEMBLY MEMBERS NOW TO URGE THEY OPPOSE THE PXP SCHEME.  ALL CONFUSION REGARDING 'ENVIRONMENTAL SUPPORT' FOR OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING MUST BE CLARIFIED.

You can easily determine who your state elected officials are and how to contact them by going here http://www.legislature.ca.gov/cgi-bin/memberinfo
