San Diego Smart Energy Solutions Campaign

Greetings,

Local Community Members Rally for Smart Energy Alternatives Instead of Sempra Energy's Sunrise Powerlink Proposal, a $9 Billion Extension Cord to Fossil-Fuels

Email the California Public Utilities Commission today! Email addresses and a sample message are below.

You won't believe the latest twist in the San Diego Smart Energy Solutions Campaign to protect Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, the Cleveland National Forest and local communities from SDG&E's unnecessary, global warming Sunrise Powerlink proposal.

On Monday, SDG&E stated to the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) that if the Commission approves Sunrise Powerlink, but tries to hold the company accountable to carry renewable energy on the line, they will not build it! This only confirms what we've been saying all along - SDG&E's proposed Sunrise Powerlink is nothing more than a bait and switch designed to carry global warming fossil-fuels.

The CPUC is set to vote in mid-December and they have three options:

1. The Commissioners could support the Administrative Law Judge's recommendation to deny SDG&E's Sunrise Powerlink proposal, because the facts show we don't need it, or

2. They could support Commissioner Grueneich's recommendation that the line only be approved if SDG&E signs a binding, enforceable clean energy guarantee, or

3. The Commissioners could ignore these recommendations and support Commissioner Peevey's proposal to build Sunrise Powerlink as SDG&E prefers: a harmful, fossil-fueled project that will worsen global warming.

With the decision only weeks away, we're in the home stretch and I need your help. Please do your part to protect the Cleveland National Forest and local communities from this unnecessary, global warming proposal by emailing each CPUC Commissioner today! I've provided the addresses and a sample letter below:

CPUC Commissioner Emails:

President Peevey: acb@cpuc.ca.gov

Commissioner Bohn: mel@cpuc.ca.gov

Commissioner Chong: jac@cpuc.ca.gov

Commissioner Grueneich: tbo@cpuc.ca.gov

Commissioner Simon: rsm@cpuc.ca.gov

Sample Message to Copy and Paste into the Body of an Email to a Commissioner:

Dear Commissioner _____:

I am writing to you about SDG&E's proposed Sunrise Powerlink. Based on the facts presented to the CPUC, this proposal would increase our region’s greenhouse gas emissions and fossil-fuel energy footprint, harm protected open spaces and unnecessarily spoil the rural character of backcountry communities.

Therefore, I strongly urge you to adopt Administrative Law Judge Vieth’s proposed decision which rejects SDG&E’s Sunrise Powerlink project as unnecessary to meet state renewable energy goals of 20% by 2010, unnecessary for grid reliability and is a bad deal for California ratepayers. There are affordable clean energy alternatives.

Any new transmission line in California should only be approved if there is a binding, written agreement that ensures it carries 100% renewable energy. Without an enforceable clean energy provision, the CPUC forfeits its best way to hold utility companies accountable. This leaves the door open to polluting, fossil-fueled projects that undercut Governor Schwarzenegger’s global warming goals.

Thank you for your consideration.

Respectfully,
