San Diego Smart Energy Solutions Campaign

Greetings,

Local Community Members Rally for Smart Energy Alternatives Instead of Sempra Energy's Sunrise Powerlink Proposal, a $9 Billion Extension Cord to Fossil-Fuels

Call the Governor's office immediately during business hours! The phone number, instructions and helpful talking points are below.

We are in the home stretch of the San Diego Smart Energy Solutions Campaign to protect Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, the Cleveland National Forest and local communities from SDG&E's unnecessary, global warming Sunrise Powerlink proposal. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) is expected to vote next week and we need to keep the pressure on!

As I've mentioned before, the CPUC has three options:

1. The Commissioners could support the Administrative Law Judge's recommendation to deny SDG&E's Sunrise Powerlink proposal, because the facts show we don't need it, or

2. They could support Commissioner Grueneich's recommendation that the line only be approved if SDG&E signs a binding, enforceable clean energy guarantee, or

3. The Commissioners could ignore these recommendations and support Commissioner Peevey's proposal to build Sunrise Powerlink as SDG&E prefers: a harmful, fossil-fueled project that will worsen global warming.

We need to remind Governor Schwarzenegger that the choice is clear: the CPUC must reject this unnecessary proposal. Any new transmission line in California should only be approved if there is a clear, binding agreement that it will carry 100% renewable energy.

Please do your part to protect the Cleveland National Forest and local communities from this unnecessary, global warming proposal by calling Governor Schwarzenegger's office immediately during business hours! I've provided the phone number, instructions and sample talking points below:

PHONE NUMBER AND INSTRUCTIONS: Call 916-445-2841 during business hours. For instructions in English, press 1. At the next prompt, press 5 to voice an opinion on a "hot issue," then press 0 to speak with a representative. You will likely be placed on hold. After holding, if you reach a recording instead of a live person, please don't give up! Call back at another time and repeat the above instructions. It is critical we voice our concerns to the Governor's office this week.

SAMPLE TALKING POINTS:

  • I am calling about SDG&E's proposed Sunrise Powerlink. This proposal would increase our region’s greenhouse gas emissions, permanently damage open spaces and harm backcountry communities.
  • I strongly urge the Governor to support the Administrative Law Judge’s proposed decision which rejects Sunrise Powerlink, because it is unnecessary and is a bad deal for  ratepayers. There are affordable clean energy alternatives.
  • Any new transmission line in California should only be approved if there is a binding agreement that ensures it carries 100% renewable energy. This is the best way to hold utility companies accountable and ensure they meet the Governor’s goals for increasing renewable energy and decreasing polluting greenhouse gas emissions.

After you call, please email me at micah.mitrosky@sierraclub.org so I can keep track of the number of calls. And stay tuned in the coming days for updates and last-minute action alerts as we near the final decision on this unnecessary proposal!

Best,

Micah

P.S. Please do your part to protect our open spaces and local communities by calling Governor Schwarzenegger's office immediately during business hours! The phone number and helpful talking points are above.
