BREAKING
NEWS: Today, in amazing disregard of the
facts, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC)
tossed aside Administrative Law Judge Jean Vieth's
recommendation to reject SDG&E's Sunrise Powerlink. Instead,
the CPUC has approved a
southern route through the Cleveland National
Forest, open spaces and local communities for this
unnecessary, fossil fueled project.
The Commissioners also ignored a proposal from
Commissioner Dian Grueneich that would have required
SDG&E to adhere to a binding clean energy guarantee. Not
only did the Commission miss a critical opportunity to hold
SDG&E accountable to deliver renewables, the Governor failed
to provide leadership on a crucial issue affecting his
greenhouse gas reduction and renewable energy goals.
Of course, today's decision is bittersweet. We
have some successes to be thankful for.
We fought hard to protect Anza-Borrego Desert State Park
from this harmful proposal and we succeeded. We can
also thank Commissioner Grueneich for her
leadership in proposing to condition approval of
this line upon renewable energy requirements. She brought
this critical discussion to the forefront, influencing
how future transmission proposals will be debated.
If you'd like to thank Commissioner Grueneich directly
for her leadership, please click here.
Now, the Sierra Club and our allies will evaluate the CPUC's
decision to determine if it adheres to applicable
environmental laws.
As usual, we will keep you posted. Thank you to all of our
volunteers, activists and community members for fighting the
good fight. It is not easy to change business as
usual. Remember, today's decision is not a
loss, merely one setback on the path to a new energy
future.
Best,
Micah
