Greetings,
The Cleveland National Forest is One of the Public Lands
Threatened by Sempra's Fossil-Fueled Sunrise Powerlink
Transmission Proposal

of the San Diego
Union-Tribune today! |
Our San Diego
Smart Energy Solutions campaign needs you to take
immediate action! As you might remember, the California
Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) recently ignored the facts
and approved a southern route for the Sunrise Powerlink that
slices through the Cleveland National Forest without even
requiring SDG&E to use the line for renewable
energy.
Yesterday's
edition of the San Diego Union-Tribune featured
an editorial that read like an SDG&E press release.
And very similar to an SDG&E press release, many of the
facts were missing! To read the editorial, please click HERE.
We know there are smarter energy solutions than
SDG&E's unnecessary Sunrise Powerlink proposal
designed to import fossil-fuels from Sempra's power plants in
Mexico. As approved, this line crosses public lands with
no guarantee it will ever carry one electron of renewable
energy. In fact, SDG&E said they would not build
this project if they had to agree to binding renewable energy
conditions.
Do your part to protect our forest and
local communities from the proposed Sunrise
Powerlink by writing a letter to the Editor
of the San
Diego Union-Tribune! This simple, effective action will help
amplify our message that there are smarter energy solutions than
the fossil-fueled, global warming Sunrise
Powerlink.
Helpful tips, contact information
and talking points are outlined below.
DO YOUR PART: WRITE A LETTER TO THE
EDITOR!
WHO: letters@uniontrib.com
WHAT: Letters must be less than 150 words
and include full name, address and phone number.
TALKING POINTS:
- The San Diego Union-Tribune's editorial, "Power
plays," omits basic facts about SDG&E's Sunrise
Powerlink and the California Public Utilities Commission's
recent decision approving this line.
- Fact 1: SDG&E said they would not build the line if they
had to adhere to a written agreement guaranteeing it would
carry renewables. Ironically, this is after years of marketing
the project as a renewable energy proposal.
- Fact 2: The Administrative Law Judge overseeing this
proceeding recommended the CPUC deny SDG&E's Sunrise
Powerlink application. This is consistent with the state and
federal government's environmental analysis showing there are
smarter energy alternatives for the region.
- Fact 3: Experts have shown this line is designed to tap
into Sempra Energy's fossil-fueled power plants over the border
in Mexico, undermining our region's efforts to reduce polluting
greenhouse gas emissions.
- California ratepayers should not be forced to shell out
billions for a line that crosses public lands with no guarantee
it will carry 100% renewable energy in order to line the
pockets of Sempra Energy executives and shareholders.
After you send your letter to the Editor, feel free to email
your letter to me in a SEPARATE email at micah.mitrosky@sierraclub.org.
Don't copy me when you send your letter,
because it is less likely to be
published.
Best,
Micah
P.S.
Recently the national PBS show
"NOW" traveled to San Diego and filmed a piece on the
Sunrise Powerlink battle! If you didn't get a chance
to watch it when it aired, click HERE to view it
online.
