Happy Holidays from the Sierra Club's San Diego Smart Energy Solutions Campaign to protect Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, the Cleveland National Forest and local communities from the harmful and unnecessary Sunrise Powerlink!

We thought a great way to wrap up the year would be to look back at some of our 2007 campaign milestones:

  • FEBRUARY: More than 500 people showed up in Borrego Springs at the California State Park and Recreation Commission Hearing to say no to Sunrise Powerlink.
  • MARCH: The campaign sadly bid goodbye to a tireless activist who devoted countless hours to saving our park and communities - thank you Kelly Fuller!
  • MAY: Activists spoke out against National Interest Electric Transmission Corridors at a hearing in San Diego.
  • JUNE: New organizer, Micah Mitrosky, came on board.
  • JULY: We rallied outside of the County Administration Building.
  • SEPTEMBER: Ranchita Rocked to stop Sunrise Powerlink and raise campaign awareness.
  • OCTOBER: With the support of public officials from all levels of government, we released our exciting alternative to Sunrise Powerlink, San Diego Smart Energy 2020, making a local media splash. We launched our campaign web site, www.sdsmartenergy.org, asking Governor Schwarzenegger for help and brought our first delegation of Community Leaders to Sacramento. We also reached out to friends and community partners during the tragic fires of this year.
  • NOVEMBER: We led a second delegation to meet with key lawmakers in Sacramento.
  • DECEMBER: Our campaign received a media boost from an Op-Ed piece in the San Diego Union-Tribune by Assembly Member Lori Saldaña and San Diego City Council Member Donna Frye. Click here to read their letter. Activists thanked these visionary leaders by writing letters to the Editor. Click here to read one letter that was published, submitted by Ms. Irene Dunny of San Diego.

Whew - it has been a busy year. Thank you for all of your help, volunteer efforts and support! YOU are the most important part of this campaign.

There is still much work to be done and we need your help to do it! The next big campaign milestone will be the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) public hearings on February 25th in Pine Valley at 6:30 and February 26th at 7:00 p.m. in Ramona. This will be our BIGGEST opportunity to send a message to the CPUC, public officials and SDG&E that Sunrise is the wrong choice for San Diego. We have smarter energy alternatives to choose from. Can you attend one of these critical hearings? If so, please send an email RSVP to mmitrosky@sierraclubsandiego.org today! Further details about the hearings will be announced in January.

Stay tuned for information on grassroots volunteer activities, organizing meetings, web site updates and the exact location of the public hearings in early 2008.

Have a great Holiday season. Thanks for all of your dedication and help. The success of this critical campaign depends on you.

Best,

Micah
