I have exciting news to share about our San Diego Smart Energy Solutions campaign to protect Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, the Cleveland National Forest and local communities from SDG&E's unnecessary, destructive Sunrise Powerlink proposal!

Today, the San Diego Union-Tribune's Opinion Page featured a powerful Op-Ed Piece by State Assembly Member Lori Saldaña and San Diego City Council Member Donna Frye. They highlighted our region's vulnerability in relying on imported power over long distances, and called for increased local, renewable power as the "smarter choice" for San Diego's energy future.

These two Public Leaders have hit the nail on the head. Sunrise Powerlink leads us down the risky path of imported, fossil-fueled power that increases global warming. On the other hand, our plan San Diego Smart Energy 2020, offers a practical roadmap to boost clean, reliable, local power.

Can you do your part to protect our park, forest and local communities from the proposed Sunrise Powerlink by writing a letter to the Editor of the Union-Tribune? This simple, effective action demonstrates to other community leaders that you support Assembly Member Lori Saldaña's and City Council Member Donna Frye's smart energy vision.

Helpful tips, contact information and talking points are outlined below.

THANK OUR LOCAL LEADERS: WRITE A LETTER TO THE EDITOR!

TALKING POINTS:

  • Hats off to Assembly Member Lori Saldaña and City Council Member Donna Frye for their bold leadership in supporting a smart energy future for our region.
  • Sunrise Powerlink promises to deliver imported, fossil-fueled power, and is a bad deal for San Diego ratepayers. Experts have shown we don't need this boondoggle.
  • San Diego Smart Energy 2020 offers an affordable roadmap to boosting reliable, local, renewable power. It is a diverse mix of solutions consistent with the state's outline for energy planning.
  • San Diego Smart Energy 2020 creates "Green Collar Jobs" for our region, diversifying our economy.
  • The safe, sensible approach for regional energy planning is to increase local production, not build more risky transmission lines.

After you send your letter to the Editor, feel free to email your letter to me in a SEPARATE email at mmitrosky@sierraclubsandiego.org. If you copy me when you send your letter, it's less likely to be published.

Best,

Micah
