I have an urgent request on behalf of the San Diego Smart Energy Solutions campaign to protect Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, the Cleveland National Forest and local communities from SDG&E's unnecessary, destructive Sunrise Powerlink proposal! Last week, Governor Schwarzenegger participated in a press event to unveil the nation's largest rooftop solar installation. A press release from his office noted that projects like this are key to achieving California's renewable energy goals. The release also said that solar power "is electricity that produces no greenhouse gases, burns no fossil fuels and requires no new transmission lines." To view the entire press release, click HERE. The Governor is right on target in recognizing the excellent merits of rooftop solar as a smart energy solution, however this position seems to conflict with his support of the unnecessary, fossil-fueled Sunrise Powerlink. Remember, according to the State's Draft Environmental Impact Report, the construction alone of Sunrise Powerlink will increase greenhouse gas emissions, a major cause of global warming. This proposal is clearly out of sync with the Governor's vision to reduce global warming greenhouse gases as outlined in his landmark legislation, AB32. I need your help to urge the Governor to support smarter energy alternatives to the damaging, fossil-fueled Sunrise Powerlink. Please write a letter today! Not only will this damaging line scar our communities and protected open spaces, the State's Draft Environmental Impact Report confirmed it will increase global warming greenhouse gases. We do not need this damaging, fossil-fueled transmission line, because there are smarter alternatives. One example is the peer-reviewed San Diego Smart Energy 2020 proposal, which emphasizes efficiency and renewables, and promises to create thousands of green collar jobs. Please support this proposal instead of the destructive Sunrise Powerlink. As the first Governor in the nation to sign comprehensive global warming legislation, you have demonstrated environmental leadership. Please keep California a great place to live by helping us defeat the Sunrise Powerlink project and secure a smart energy future for our region.
