San Diego Smart Energy Solutions Campaign

Greetings,

Unlike the Damaging, Fossil-Fueled Sunrise Powerlink, the San Diego Smart Energy 2020 Proposal Emphasizes Efficiency and Clean Renewables.

Send a letter to the Editor of the Sacramento Bee today!

The San Diego Smart Energy Solutions campaign to protect Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, the Cleveland National Forest and local communities from SDG&E's unnecessary, destructive Sunrise Powerlink proposal needs you to take immediate action!

Today, the Sacramento Bee ran a story on renewable energy - the only problem is the article mischaracterized SDG&E's Sunrise Powerlink as a renewable energy project! And, the Governor weighed in, echoing this misinformation.  You and I know the true story of the Sunrise Powerlink - that it is being built to carry dirty, fossil-fueled global warming energy from Sempra Energy's new liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Mexico to the greater Los Angeles area. We need to alert the Editor of the Sacramento Bee about this important detail. Click HERE to read the full story.

Please do your part today to protect our parks, forests and local communities from the unnecessary Sunrise Powerlink and ensure a smarter energy future for San Diego by writing a letter to the Editor of the Sacramento Bee! We need at least 100 letters written by noon tomorrow. Can you help make that critical deadline? Helpful tips, contact information and talking points are outlined below.

WRITE A LETTER TO THE EDITOR OF THE SACRAMENTO BEE!

WHO: Editor of the Sacramento Bee. Click HERE to open the form and send your letter or open a new browser window and copy and paste the link below into the address bar:

WHAT: Letters must be less than 200 words

TALKING POINTS:

  • The Sacramento Bee correctly reported that global warming demands new, bold approaches to energy planning.
  • Unfortunately, the story mischaracterized San Diego Gas & Electric's (SDG&E) Sunrise Powerlink as a renewable energy project.  Sunrise Powerlink will actually deliver global warming, fossil-fueled power from Sempra Energy's new liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Baja Mexico to Southern California. Sempra is SDG&E's unregulated global parent company.
  • By building this LNG terminal over the border, Sempra skirted U.S. environmental and labor laws. The fuel that will be imported into this terminal will travel from overseas countries like Russia and Indonesia.
  • In reality, Sunrise Powerlink is a fossil-fueled global warming project that leaves Southern Californians more dependent on imported energy. And, the state of California's recent environmental report found that it will significantly increase fire risk in the region.
  • San Diego's existing transmission line can access renewable energy in Imperial County and deliver it to the grid.
  • A more environmentally-responsible plan called San Diego Smart Energy 2020 has been proposed.  It emphasizes clean, local renewable energy and will foster a "green energy economy." It is modeled after the State's energy planning policy and will reduce global warming greenhouse gases.

After you send your letter, feel free to email a copy to me at mmitrosky@sierraclubsandiego.org.

Best,

Micah

P.S. Send a letter to the Editor of the Sacramento Bee today! This simple, effective action will help amplify our message that Sunrise Powerlink will carry global warming fossil-fueled energy, not renewables.  There are smarter energy alternatives that will create a green energy economy and robust power infrastructure right here in San Diego.
