It's been a busy
summer for the San Diego Smart Energy Solutions campaign to
protect Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, the Cleveland National
Forest and local communities from SDG&E's unnecessary,
destructive Sunrise Powerlink proposal and ensure smarter energy
solutions for our region. And, we're gearing up for an even
busier fall. In the meantime, I'd like to share our
latest news and also tell you about the upcoming 2nd Annual
"Ranchita Rocks" benefit concert!
LATEST SUNRISE
POWERLINK NEWS
On August 1st,
California Public Utilities Commissioner (CPUC) Dian
Grueneich issued a grim ruling. In it she stated that
not only does it appear SDG&E misrepresented
information to the Public Utilities Commission,
but SDG&E also did not follow the rules
in publicly filing documents that were given to CPUC
staff during meetings the company had with
them. Clearly unhappy with the utility, the
CPUC has given SDG&E 15 days to respond and clarify why they
should not be fined or receive other penalties for breaching
CPUC rules. To read coverage in the
San Diego Union-Tribune, please click HERE.
Of course, this ruling appears to be the latest
in a pattern of Sempra and SDG&E missteps,
misinformation and contradictions that have plagued this
process. It came almost a year to the day when
Commissioner Grueneich delayed the proceeding on July 24, 2007
because SDG&E had withheld critical information
about potential future expansion of the Sunrise
Powerlink, information that is necessary for a proper
environmental analysis.
And, most recently, the CPUC delayed the process again when
Sempra, SDG&E's parent company, changed critical information
that impacted the environmental analysis.
Then there's the fact that independent experts
believe this unnecessary project is designed to import
more global warming fossil fuels from Sempra's
new liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Mexico, even though
SDG&E's PR campaign still clings to the seemingly empty
promise of renewable energy. What other surprises are in
store for the CPUC and the public about the troubled Sunrise
Powerlink proposal?
Stay tuned! We'll keep you posted when SDG&E responds to
the CPUC, which we expect to happen any day now.

We
know there are smarter energy solutions than
Sempra/SDG&E's old-fashioned, fossil-fueled Sunrise
Powerlink. This is the wrong direction for San
Diego. We need clean reliable 21st Century energy
infrastructure that will also create "green collar" jobs in our
local economy, such as Bill Powers' San Diego Smart Energy
2020 proposal.
Best,
Micah
