Our San
Diego Smart Energy Solutions campaign to protect Anza-Borrego
Desert State Park, the Cleveland National Forest and local
communities from SDG&E's unnecessary, destructive Sunrise
Powerlink proposal needs you to take immediate
action!
Last week's
San Diego Union-Tribune (UT) was buzzing with
energy news. On Thursday, the paper reported that the
nation needs new transmission lines in order to tap
renewable energy. Unfortunately, the
UT incorrectly cited SDG&E's troubled Sunrise
Powerlink as a local example. The
UT failed to mention that experts have found
this proposal is not needed for energy reliability,
and SDG&E has admitted under sworn testimony to the
California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) that they don't
need it to meet state renewable energy
mandates! To read the full story, click HERE.
The next day the
UT also reported that Sempra Energy has officially
dedicated its new liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal in
Mexico. This is the same LNG terminal that will
link global warming, imported fossil-fuels from the Middle East
and Indonesia with our electricity grid by
using SDG&E's Sunrise Powerlink. To
see how the two are connected, click HERE.

We know there are smarter 21st century energy
solutions than SDG&E's unnecessary, fossil-fueled Sunrise
Powerlink proposal! For example, the UT
recently reported that the U.S. Department of Energy
pledged over $500,000 to San Diego to help make us a
national model for solar power production. To read the
full article, click HERE.
And, KPBS recently reported on practical alternatives
that SDG&E is ignoring while the company
continues to pursue the ill-conceived Sunrise
Powerlink. Click HERE
to listen to KPBS' excellent report.
Do your part to protect our park,
forest and local communities from the proposed Sunrise
Powerlink by writing a letter to the editor
of the San
Diego Union-Tribune! This simple, effective action will help
amplify our message that the unnecessary, global
warming Sunrise Powerlink is standing in the way of better,
smarter energy alternatives for San Diego.
Helpful tips, contact information
and talking points are outlined below.

EDITOR!
WHO: letters@uniontrib.com
WHAT: Letters must be less than 150 words
and include full name, address and phone number.
TALKING POINTS:
- Re: "Cramped power grid foils renewable plans," the
Union-Tribune gives SDG&E a free PR pass by failing to
mention that independent technical experts maintain this
unnecessary proposal is not needed for grid reliability, and
that SDG&E has admitted under sworn testimony in front of
the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) that they
don't even need it to meet state renewable energy goals.
- Sunrise Powerlink promises to deliver energy from
fossil-fuels imported from the Middle East and Indonesia through
Sempra's new liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in
Mexico. This leaves Southern Californians dependent
on imported energy from overseas, fluctuating
commodity prices and unravels efforts to reduce global warming
greenhouse gases.
- Sunrise Powerlink is a roadblock to clean, renewable energy
for our region. The more environmentally-responsible plan,
San Diego Smart Energy 2020, is consistent with
California's energy planning policy and emphasizes clean, local
21st Century infrastructure instead of the outdated, enormously
expensive Sunrise Powerlink. This plan can be jump
started with incentives like the Department of Energy's recent
$500,000 solar grant to San Diego, recently reported in the
Union-Tribune.
- Independent expert analysis has shown over and over that
this line is not needed, because we have smarter,
cleaner alternatives. The California Public Utility
Commission's own environmental analysis found that
in-basin renewable energy alternatives are better than
constructing the unnecessary Sunrise Powerlink.
- California taxpayers should not be forced to shell out more
than $9 billion for an unnecessary glorified extension
cord to fossil fuels in order to line the pockets of
Sempra Energy Executives and shareholders. There are better,
more practical, ways to invest our limited energy
dollars.
