Great Lakes Compact Passed Through Congress!

The passage of the Great Lakes Compact is the first step in protecting our Great LakeLake Erie.  The Great Lakes Compact calls on each Great Lakes state to develop a water conservation and management program.  Ohio will begin this process of implementing the requirement early next year, so be sure to stay tuned!  But in the meantime, please thank both U.S. Senators George Voinovich and Sherrod Brown and your respective Congressional member, if they voted “yes” for the Compact.

It is critically important that we protect Lake Erie because of all it offers to Ohio:

  • It produces more fish for human consumption than the other four lakes combined.
  • More than seven million people annually visit Lake Erie to wildlife watch, reconnect with friends and family, hunt, boat and fish.
  • Lake Erie generates roughly $10 billion in revenue each year from travel and tourism – and supplies drinking water to nearly 2.5 million Ohioans.

Subject: You spoke! They listened!

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I am writing to thank you for your support of the Great Lakes - St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resource Compact (Senate Joint Resolution 45).

As you know, the Great Lakes hold 20% of our world's and 95% of our nation's freshwater. The passage of this historic legislation ensures that our water stays within our region to support our way of life. Lake Erie is the most unique of all the Great Lakes. It is the shallowest, warmest, and the most biologically productive. It produces more fish for human consumption than the other four lakes combined.

Lake Erie also provides drinking water for nearly 2.5 million Ohioans and places for millions of Ohioans and tourist to relax and reconnect.

Because of your support for this historic legislation, the Great Lakes states have a common set of principles to ensure sustainable use within the basin while prohibiting the exportation of Great Lakes water to foreign countries or parched states. This legislation is truly forward thinking. We don't have to look to far, like to Tennessee and Georgia, to see the effects that access to freshwater is having on local economies and communities' quality of life.

Thank you again for your support of the Great Lakes - St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact.

Sincerely,

Campaign Launched:
September 25, 2008
