No Compromise on ENDA: Take Action Now!

Equality for All of Us - No Compromise on ENDA
Workplace non-discrimination legislation must include gender identity

House Democratic leaders have expressed their intent to remove non-discrimination provisions covering transgender persons from the federal Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA).

The professed justification for including some LGBT people and not others is that ENDA may not pass if transgender-inclusive language is part of the bill.  This would mean that, even if the bill were to pass and become law, it would still be legal in the vast majority of states, including Michigan, to fire someone from their job simply because of their gender identity and/or expression.

At Triangle Foundation we are working to eliminate discrimination based on
sexual orientation and gender identity/expression.

We need you to let your U.S. Representative and the House leadership know that you support ENDA as it is written NOW - including gender identity.  Our elected leaders need to know that we do NOT support legislation that protects some community members and not others.

There is no room for "compromise" in equality.

Subject: Support workplace equality for everyone!

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I hope that you are going to support a fully inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act.

Here in Michigan I can be fired if my boss thinks I'm gay or transgender. My sexual orientation or gender identity has nothing to do with my job performance.

When you are considering your position, please remember that transgender workers are just as vulnerable in the workplace as are gay, lesbian and bisexual workers, and for many of the same reasons. All of us deserve the same rights and protections, not just some of us.

Workplace inequality is a real and pressing problem for sexual minorities. A recent survey of studies from the past ten years by the UCLA School of Law has found that up to 57% of GLBT Americans have experienced workplace discrimination in their lifetime.

No one deserves to be fired because of because of who they love or who they are.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you that you have chosen to support this vital legislation.

Sincerely,

Background Information

Over 80 organizations including nearly every national GLBT organization supports ENDA - but only if the law includes our transgender brothers and sisters.

Employment protection is critical for all Americans, including transgender Americans. A vote on ENDA could happen any day and we need to tell Congress that leaving out protections for "gender identity" could put those protections in jeopardy for years. It would be a demoralizing defeat to come this far and then have a portion of our community left out in the cold. A real victory is near but only if we act now to protect all people.
