Earlier today, the
Michigan House Committee on Judiciary passed House Bill 4192 to
amend the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act. This act protects
people from discrimination in housing, employment and public
accommodations based upon religion, race, color, national
origin, age, sex, height, weight, familial status, or marital
status.
HB 4192 amends
Elliott-Larsen to add sexual orientation, gender identity or
expression to the list of protected
classes.
With this, Michigan can proudly say that we are leading the way
on behalf of equality and fairness for all of our
residents. The passage of the Kalamazoo
anti-discrimination ordinance yesterday was a tremendous victory
and the momentum for equality is continuing with the committee
vote today. We thank Representative Rebekah Warren for her
leadership on this issue and we look forward to working with her
as the legislative process
continues.
There is
still a long road to equality for LGBT citizens in this country
and more specifically, in our state. Triangle Foundation asks
all of you who were so dedicated to making tremendous things
happen on election day to remain engaged. Bernadette Brown,
Triangle Foundation’s Director of Policy, is in Lansing
weekly, educating people on issues important to our community,
like Elliott-Larsen. Election day may have passed,
but there is more work to be
done.
The
Committee vote on HB 4192 today is broken down below. Please
take a moment to contact your representative and thank them for
their support with this important effort.
